If ever you needed a dress to take you through every season and show up for you on a variety of occasions; the slip dress would be that dress. Simply put, the slip dress will take you into Fall. Its versatility and timeless elegance is simply why its a staple for any wardrobe. This has been my go to dress all summer long and has typically taken me from day to night on a myriad of occasions. With the pandemic looming over us 18 months later, my focus has shifted from consumerism to more of a minimalistic approach (Disclaimer: please note that the previous statement is subject to change Lol). While I still love to engage in the art of shopping, I find that my trips to the mall and online purchases have been more purposeful. With this new approach I have been repurposing my favourites by styling them in new ways, rediscovering my love for each piece. Simply put, this is why the slip dress will take you into fall and has been a favourite of mine for some time now. In this post I’m sharing a few things to consider when purchasing a slip dress based on my experience, as well as some tips on how you can style it for the fall weather.

Things to Consider when Purchasing a Slip Dress

Finding the perfect slip dress is no easy feat. In my hunt for the perfect slip dress I tried at least ten, before finding the one. There were several things I considered and learnt during my hunt, which aided in deciding whether or not the dress made it home with me. Here are some the factors that I considered and learnt along the way, which ultimately affected my purchase:

  1. Colour – Personally I wanted a vibrant or deep colour that would not only accentuate the simplicity of the dress but compliment me as well. The slip dress captured in this post is a mixture of yellow, gold, and green hues which are great colours across each season and also complimented my skin tone well.
  2. Length – Slip dresses come in a variety of lengths – mini, midi and maxi. The length you choose can be based upon the occasion, your comfort level or style preference. Mini-slip dresses are great for parties and some celebratory occasions like birthdays. Maxi-slip dresses are great for formal occasions like a wedding or even black tie events. In my opinion, midi-slip dresses are the most versatile of them all and are great for almost every occasion and can easily take you from day to night with the right accessories.
  3. Neckline – The slip dress’ neckline may be a factor to consider when looking for the perfect dress. While the cowl neckline is a popular style with slip dresses, personally it didn’t work well for me or perhaps I haven’t found the right one as yet. Something to keep in mind is that the fit of a dress may vary across brands and designers, for the same style. Having no luck with a cowl neckline, I instead opted for a “V” neckline which laid flat and complimented me the best. When shopping, try a variety of necklines to see which works best for you.
  4. Overall fit – Your body type plays a key role in the decision making process. The overall fit especially in the hip area for us women with curves is a key factor to consider. You want to ensure that the fabric is loose enough in the hip area without any bunching, and that the dress has been cut in a way to accommodate your body type.
